Insights of an Intern: My First Day at Locable
I’ve been living in California for about two years now. It’s been a huge adjustment considering I lived in New England for eighteen years. I grew up in a little town called Rumford, Rhode Island. Obviously known for it’s booming business of Rumford Baking Powder back in 1856. My love for the Boston Red Sox, and Dunkin Donuts Coffee is flowing through my veins, and only occasionally do I forget to pronounce my R’s.
Until I moved out to California, one would consider me “digitally clueless”. The relevance of digital or local business had never been a thought that crossed my mind. So here I am, a business major at Sierra College, trying to figure out what I am doing with my life. I have several family members that are working in local digital business. So I have the advantage of knowing more than an average college student would know about the industry. Having family in a business where you’re trying to get your footing is extremely helpful. So long story short, one thing lead to another, and before you know it there was an internship in the works.
So last Thursday, I finally met Brian and Ryan at the new Locable office in Folsom. Just note, weeks prior to this meeting, Brian had asked me to read their website and familiarize myself with what exactly Locable does, how it operates and so on. So I did just that. I read their website from top to bottom three times. (Yes, you read that correctly). I had thought of at least 50 questions to ask and I felt more than prepared for this meeting. So I thought. When I arrived, the combination of nerves and anxiety lead me to answer Brian and Ryan’s questions with Okay’s and head nods, instead of actual formed thoughts that were racing around my head. Brian and Ryan were very welcoming and understanding. If I didn’t have prior knowledge in business in the basics, I can only compare our conversation being equivalent to holding a conversation with someone who speaks Spanish and the only word you can understand is Hola. Overall, the conversation went really well. I am ecstatic to start work with Brian and Ryan and learn more about start-ups, digital business, local media, and just working in an office setting. They are both knowledgeable, and I could be wrong, but they seem excited to teach me as well. I’m excited to be their new Locable protégé.
